List of Chemicals used in Agriculture and its Usage

We live in the modern and advanced technological era where things have been changing rapidly. If we talk about modern agriculture, it is being required to reasonable quality control to produce foods due to technological advancement. Agricultural chemicals play an essential role in agriculture to grow crops and control weeds, disease, pests, or other unwanted herbs.  

Based on the purposes, these agricultural chemicals can be categorized into insecticides, bactericides, fungicides, molluscicides, nematicides, miticides, wood preservatives, rodenticides, and many more. Based on the chemical structure of agriculture chemicals, they are also classified into organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, & other synthetic pyrethroid chemicals. 

The use of chemicals in the agriculture field helps increase crop yields & to meet the demands of growing well-being. Here are lists of agriculture chemicals & their usage. Before getting into complete details, let’s talk about what agrochemical exactly is.

Agricultural Chemical – Definition

Agricultural chemicals are agro-compounds used to control crop-harming organisms, like fungi, nematodes, insects, modes, rodents, & viruses (collectively referred to as diseases & pests). 

These chemicals are categorized as follows by applications targeted to grow healthy crops.

  • Insecticides. Used to control insect pests, bugs, etc., that damage field crops.
  • Fungicides. Used to prevent diseases that damage field crops.
  • Herbicides. Used simultaneously to protect crops & control weeds.
  • Rodenticides. Used to control rats and other rodent attacks.

Apart from this, there are a few soil fumigants, desiccants, plant growth regulators, which are helpful to promote, inhibit the growth of crops. Farmers apply these agricultural compounds to provide complete protection to field crops from diseases, pests, and weeds. Agrochemicals are used in fields to increase crop production and improve fertility. 

Now, let’s talk about the usage of Agricultural Chemicals:

  1. Insecticides. 

Insecticides are toxic substances that are applied in the agricultural field to kill harmful insects. These compounds are used to control pests that infest crops and cultivated plants or to eliminate disease-carrying insects.

These compounds are sprayed or dusted onto plants to get rid of harmful pests.  

Insecticides are also classified in different ways – 

  • Chemistry 
  • Toxicological reactions
  • Mode of penetration  

Some of the effective insecticides also permitted in organic farming are ingestion (Stomach poison), inhalation (fumigants), etc. 

  • Stomach Poisons: Stomach poisons are toxic ingestion beneficial against insects that bite or chew plants such as caterpillars, beetles, grasshoppers, etc. these ingestions are arsenicals Paris Green (copper acetoarsenite), lead arsenate, & calcium arsenate, fluorine, etc. 
  • Fumigants: It is another toxic compound used to kill insects by entering their respiratory systems with the help of spiracles or breathe openings. Such chemicals include hydrogen cyanide, nicotine, Methyl Bromide, etc., which are used to fumigate nursery stock or keep them safe. 
  1. Herbicides: 

A chemical pesticide is produced to control or eliminate weeds and unwanted herbs. Herbicides lead to a wide range of effects on non-target species. It is a chemical used to kill or otherwise control certain plant species taken to be pests. 

Farmers apply it to enhance agricultural productivity, but it also decreases the yields of crop plants due to high-level toxicity. 

Here are a few types of herbicides 

  • Chlorophenoxy Acid Herbicides: These kinds of herbicides are toxic compounds used for selective broad-leaved of angiosperm plants. These herbicides are moderately persistent in the environment, with their half-life in soil measured in weeks & persistence of over a year. 
  • Triazine Herbicides: Triazine Herbicides are primarily used in corn agriculture. As they are not persistent in surface soils, they can cause contamination of groundwater.
  1. Fungicides.

Fungicides are those pesticides used to kill or destroy the growth of fungi and their spore parts. Fungus damage to plants and small crops should be prevented, so fungicides are the sources to control such damages. 

There are multiple types of fungi, bacteria, nematodes, etc., which cause plant disease and tend to destroy their fertility.

So, fungicides are used. These compounds are sprayed or dusted onto plants, & they stick to the surfaces. This activity creates a protective barrier to prevent fungus from damaging plant tissues and leaves. 

  1. Rodenticides. 

Rodenticide is another agriculture chemical applied in the field to kill rats or rodent pests & prevent them from destroying food, crops, plants, etc. It is one type of pesticide formulated as baits with attractive substances like peanut butter, molasses, cheese, etc. 

Warfarin, 1080 – Sodium Fluoroacetate, ANTU – Alpha-naphthyl thiourea, Red Squill, etc., are commonly used as rodenticides.

Fumigants like sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, methyl bromide, etc., are also used as rodenticides.

These substances are formulated as baits to kill mice, rats by normal blood clotting & disturbance in nervous system functions. 

Closing Thoughts

Agriculture chemicals like pesticides, rodenticides, herbicides, etc., are widely applied in agricultural fields to improve fertility and crop yields. These compounds are used synthetically to prevent weeds, pests, rodents, etc., from doing occupation destroying and crop-damaging.

Overuse of chemicals can also cause environmental pollution and affect human health. So, it is necessary to reduce the overuse of chemicals.

It is necessary to figure out sustainable alternatives to traditional agriculture techniques which can be user and environmental-friendly. This will help to reduce toxicities, increase crop yield and productivity.
